The viola da gamba was widely used in Europe from the 16th to the 18th century when Renaissance and Baroque music flourished.

Characterized by its soft and delicate timbre and reverberation, it was suitable for chamber music, so it was played at royal courts, churches, and homes.
It resembles the cello, violin, and viola in terms of size and name, but there are differences in how it is played.

Performed by PRISM consort of viols.
This is a lecture concert that uses three types of viola da gamba, treble, tenor, and bass, to unravel the history and the types and characteristics of these instruments. (About 3 minutes without break)
